Origin of GPT-3
OpenAI is an artificial intelligence research lab and linked to big names such as Elon Musk and Sam Altman. OpenAI's language scientists conceived and developed GPT-3. Remarkably, they have opened up accessibility to this model. In fact, OpenAi gave exclusive access to a beta version last year that allowed users to test this model themselves. As a result, GPT-3 garnered a lot of media attention. GPT-3 originated as a language model that started looking for patterns in large amounts of text. Meanwhile, GPT-3 can not only observe well, but also write itself. The ultimate goal is for this model to write content indistinguishable from a human's writing skills.
The operation of GPT-3
GPT-3 is a master at predicting language. Based on all kinds of different texts and words, GPT-3's algorithm finds the answer. Fun fact: GPT-3 went through some 570 GB of text! To give you a better idea of that: 1 GB equals about 166,000,000 words. GPT-3 has learned what the desired answer is and, thanks to training, has gotten better and better at predicting optimal answers. Basically, GPT-3 thus summarises text already written by millions of people and then comes up with an answer to a question (=ask). This result is often understandable as well as pleasant to read.
Applications of GPT-3
Can GPT-3 only write texts? Yes, but the applications in this are endless. For instance, GPT-3 can also design an application based on a description, answer difficult questions, guess movie titles based on hints, be used as a chatbot and write programming code. GPT-3 can even play a chess match, by scrapping online information about strategies and the different moves. Oh, and but for now, GPT-3 is not available to everyone: in the Netherlands, for instance, only a handful of parties have permission to use GPT-3.
What can GPT-3 not (yet) do?
- Remember what has already been written, it can only remember a small text window in the past
- Generate longer texts, such as for a book, because then there is no storyline. Indeed, the paragraphs soon become too random without any connection to each other
- The model could fall into the wrong hands and be used for phishing emails or fake news
GPT-3 does not recognise discrimination, disinformation and conspiracy theories and this is sometimes reflected in the pieces of text generated by GPT-3. The reason for this is that the model is trained with what is on the internet. It is therefore sometimes referred to as a 'trend with a dark side'.
Will GPT-3 take over the work of copywriters, journalists or programmers?
No, right now, as a copywriter or programmer, you don't have to worry about that. While GPT-3 can certainly be an addition when writing certain texts, the algorithm still falls into repetition at the moment, lacks fine sentence structure and does not yet have a smooth rhythm in longer texts. Also, GPT-3 cannot yet create short and catchy texts supported by angles related to psychological influence. Of course, the model also cannot bring out news or code reliable pieces.
Further developments of GPT-3
AI cannot access meaning beyond words. We use context to interpret different situations, understand the meaning of language and can relate feelings to it.
